The Travel Counsellors annual conference is a highly anticipated event that is high on the wish-list of many. Every year, at conference events around the globe, Head Office staff, partners and suppliers, international colleagues and Travel Counsellors together over 3 days to network, learn and collaborate with each other. In May 2018, the Travel Counsellors Australia conference will take place in Cairns, so we sent Managing Director Fred van Eijk on a mission to discover the best of tropical Far North Queensland…

While some Aussies travel thousands of kilometres in search for true tropical paradise, I found it right in Australia’s backyard on his first trip to Cairns. A tropical paradise in the northeast Australian state of Queensland, the relaxed aura of Cairns is hard to ignore. A tourist destination that is equally enjoyable for both backpackers and the luxury-seeking traveller. You’ll find a restaurant to suit along the Esplanade, the opportunity to hunt for souvenirs on the night markets and of course there is the sublime underwater paradise of the Great Barrier Reef, just an hour and a half away by boat. On a daily basis, a diversity of boats and catamarans leave for the Great Barrier Reef yet no matter how you get there, the experience will be unforgettable.

Popular for its tropical climate, Cairns also offers the beautiful Daintree which is a truly impressive spot and perfect to get the full tropical rainforest experience. Travel a little further and you will find the breath-taking waterfalls of Atherton Tablelands, a park that is also great for strolling around and canoeing. And don’t forget the beaches! Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove Beach and Ellis Beach are famous, but make sure you check with the lifeguards and local signs before you walk into the sea… however inviting it may look, it can be just as dangerous.

Closer to the city, the Kuranda Skyrail cable ride – which soars over 7.5 kilometres of the rainforest – and the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park are two of the many options you can choose from.
