Careers & Marketing Executive Nessa Hurley with Travel Counsellor's Sharon Tiernan Murphy and Karen Morgan Murphy

The 30th July marks the United Nations’ International Day of Friendship. It is a day recognising the value of friendship and is a time to celebrate our friends both near and far. As a business built on relationships, the strength of friendship is something our Travel Counsellors understand very well. You might expect it to be difficult to build new friendships when you make the move to start your own home-based travel business, but the reality is quite the opposite at Travel Counsellors.

We asked Travel Counsellor Sharon Tiernan Murphy to tell us about the friendships she has made since joining us in 2015.

To be honest I have made some amazing friends since joining Travel Counsellors.  I knew 3 other TC’s before I joined, and we have continued to build lovely friendships both personally and through our businesses where we are very close and help each very often.

The one friendship that has grown is with Karen Morgan-Murphy whom I never knew or met before Travel Counsellors. Karen joined a few months after me and lives very close to me, the same village in fact! We organised a phone call straight away to introduce ourselves and I feel that we bonded straight away and have built a solid friendship in the last 3 years. From helping each other with random questions during a day, calling for a chat or meeting for a coffee is just some of the benefits of having each other so close. We can share the driving if going to a cruise ship visit, a travel event, training evenings, our Annual Conference for which we have become roomies too!

During our time as Travel Counsellors we have teamed together and organised some weddings fairs, exhibitions, group talks and networking events which has been lovely as these can be a little daunting on your own. Other times we are there to give each other advice or help on personal experiences. It is so nice to have a good friend so close and I know if I need anything Karen is only a call away and vice versa. I know we will remain good friends for many years to come as we grow our businesses even further.

When you become a Travel Counsellor, you become self-employed, but that does not mean you are alone. At Travel Counsellors, we value relationships over everything, whether it is International Day of Friendship or not. Wouldn’t it be nice to be part of a company like that?
