When I joined Travel Counsellors my daughter Tilika was only 5 ½ and my son Nilavan was 8 months old. Our first family photo show above on the left was taken in October 2009 and I started running my own business in the January 2010. The photo on the right was taken nearly 8 years later. 2017 in particular as a very difficult year for me personally as I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Travel Counsellors gave me all the support that I needed during this time, and I didn’t have to worry about my business. Now I celebrate 8 years being in business and I have set for myself personal and business goals that I am working towards achieving and I am feeling very positive for the year ahead. 8 years later it's incredible to see the growth in myself personally, in my business and in my family with our my kids who are now 13 and a half years old and almost nine years old.

We caught up with Roshnee and asked her a few questions:

What attracted you to join Travel Counsellors
I was attracted to Travel Counsellors due to the flexibility that I would be able to get so that I could be with my growing children.

Did you have any fears and concerns about going on your own?
Yes, I didn’t have a database when I joined, and I was worried about how I was going to build one and to earn an income. Travel Counsellors assured me that with good service, I would build my business through word of mouth and that is how I have progressed. My clients around the world missed me while I was ill in 2017.

Why did you choose Travel Counsellors?
I chose Travel Counsellors due to the Family ethos that they have.

Since joining Travel Counsellors how has the company grown or moved in terms of technology?
I love how Phenix (our exclusive dynamic packaging system has evolved). Phenix makes the process of making bookings so much easier.

What do you love most about being a Travel Counsellor?
Definitely, the flexibility to be with my growing children. I took ill last year and where this would normally have been a huge problem in terms of work, due to the Travel Counsellors support system I didn’t have to worry about getting back to work. I would focus on myself and my health and another bonus my colleagues who stepped in to help me I didn’t have to worry about them stealing my client base as Travel Counsellors business model protects that.

What has becoming a Travel Counsellors done for you personally?
Had I still been working in the industry, I don’t know if I would still be married! I am a very dedicated person and I am a perfectionist, so as much as I have a far better work-life balance, I still battle to let go when I am very busy. As a perfectionist, I must complete everything on my desk daily.

Again, from 8 December 2016, the day that I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was supported by Travel Counsellors. I am very fortunate to have gone through the treatment and to have recovered as smoothly as I have plus I have managed to get back on my feet in my business.

What do you hope to achieve in 2018?
* 2018 is going to be the year that I achieve the best turnover and the best margin.
* I have set a personal goal that I would like to work towards paying off our bond on our new home.

What is your favourite destination?
Disney World

What is on your bucket list
Reunion / Maldives / Sri Lanka / Vic Falls

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining Travel Counsellors?
It would be great to come to Travel Counsellors with an established database, however, if you don’t, it is still possible to build a successful business, as I have done. I would also suggest that you save for at least 3 months so that in the leaner months while you build a business you will be fine.
